Protect The North Fork
The Issue
The North Fork is a unique and cherished community, not just a piece of "available land" for industrial exploitation. For those of us who call this place home, it's more than just geography; it's a way of life. Our region is a fragile coastal area with limited infrastructure, a sole-source aquifer, lush farmland, diverse wetlands, and serene residential communities. Our tourism and agriculture industries thrive precisely because they respect this delicate balance, something large-scale data centers threaten to permanently disrupt.
The recent surge in plans to build large-scale data centers in New York and Long Island jeopardizes not just our environment but our whole way of life. These facilities could compromise our sole-source aquifer, a critical resource, by over-extracting water and potentially polluting it. The construction and operation of these centers pose a risk of increased emissions, road congestion, and noise pollution, fundamentally altering the quiet, rural character that is essential both to our community and to an economy based on tourism and agriculture.
Our existing infrastructure is simply not equipped to handle the massive resources and demands these data centers will bring. Furthermore, a large-scale industrial infrastructure without proper environmental protections in place could drastically impact our wetlands and farms that are essential to our local ecosystem and economy.
To protect our community and way of life, we must pause the construction of these data centers until stringent environmental protections are established. This would include clear regulations on water usage, emission control, and waste management, to ensure the preservation of our natural resources.
We must act now to preserve the identity, integrity, and beauty of the North Fork. I urge you to join me in protecting our community by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that any development in our area will be in harmony with the environment and respectful of the local communities that depend on it.
