Protect the Natural Beaches of Koufonisia – Keep Them Wild and Free
The Issue
The beaches of Koufonisia, the two small islands in the heart of the Aegean Sea, are known for something rare:
They are natural.
They are unorganized.
They are free.
For decades, locals and visitors alike have respected these beaches — with no beach bars, no loud music, no rows of sunbeds covering the sand. Just crystal waters, raw beauty, and the peaceful simplicity that makes Koufonisia unique.
As a community, we have cared for these shores for many years. We protect them, clean them, and value them not as business assets — but as part of our identity and natural heritage.
Now, parts of these beaches are at risk of being sold for commercial use. Plans reportedly include canteens, organized facilities, and the installation of sunbeds.
This development would permanently change the character of Koufonisia.
We are not against tourism.
We are not against local economic activity.
But Koufonisia’s beauty lies precisely in what it is not:
It is not overdeveloped.
It is not crowded with infrastructure.
It is not another commercial coastline.
Once a wild beach becomes commercialized, it cannot truly return to its original state.
We respectfully call on the local authorities and relevant decision-makers to:
Reject any plans for commercial exploitation of Koufonisia’s natural beaches
Preserve their unorganized and protected character
Safeguard free and equal access for everyone
Protect the environmental balance of these small and fragile islands
Koufonisia’s beaches are part of a delicate ecosystem and a shared heritage.
They belong to nature.
They belong to the community.
They belong to future generations.
Help us keep Koufonisia wild, natural, and free.
