Protect the last remaining healthy Tasmanian Devil population from becoming roadkill
The Tasmanian Devil is a national icon and the pride of Tasmania. North West Tasmania is home to the last remaining healthy population of devils in the wild, yet to be affected by the deadly facial tumor disease.
The Circular Head council has failed to protect the native species by voting against measures to reduce the speed on Woollnorth road from 100 to 80 kmph. Please sign this petition to urge them to overturn this decision.
Since January 2021, on a 25km stretch of road on the north west corner of Tasmania, nearly 200 Tasmanian devils have been killed by traffic, some in broad daylight. Only recently, three devils were killed, one of which was a lactating female. 80 is only a conservative estimate of the real fatality rate.
We need urgent action to protect this endangered species now before we lose this healthy population. The local community here is deeply concerned about the devils and has been advocating for years for more protection. The council and state government have still not taken any real action. We urge the council to immediately reduce the speed on Woollnorth road.
We cannot afford to lose the last health devil population because of government inaction. Please sign and share this petition to help our Tasmanian devils to survive.
