The Issue

Growing up in the picturesque landscape of the Lake District during the 70s and 80s, I cherished the pristine lakes and majestic fells around Keswick, a legacy of beauty now heartbreakingly tarnished. The very lakes where I swam and the trails I wandered are now littered with remnants of carelessness: discarded poo bags, abandoned tents, and scorched campfire sites. The countryside code we once revered has been overshadowed by the influx incited largely by social media influencers promoting these 'hidden gems'.

Today, the Lake District, a cherished national treasure, faces a dire threat from overwhelming litter, unauthorized fly camping, and relentless over tourism. These issues are not only defacing the natural beauty but are also wreaking havoc on the fragile ecosystem, altering water quality, impacting wildlife, and straining the resources of local services like mountain rescue and hospitals. Moreover, it has forced property prices up, pushing locals out of affordable housing.

It's time for decisive action from the government, Lake District National Park Authority, the National Trust, Westmorland and Furness Council, and Cumbria Constabulary. We need stronger regulations encompassing stringent enforcement against littering and unauthorized camping, increased funding for waste management, and dedicated campaigns to educate visitors about responsible tourism and the countryside code.

Further, it's crucial to develop a sustainable tourism model that balances the area's economic benefits while preserving the natural environment. Visitor caps during peak seasons, improved public transport options to reduce car usage, and incentives for eco-friendly accommodations are steps worthy of consideration.

Our beloved Lake District deserves better, and so do the communities who have called it home for generations. Therefore, I urge you to join this cause to safeguard our environment and heritage for today's and future generations. Sign this petition to demand robust measures for protecting the Lake District against litter, fly camping, and over tourism. Let’s ensure this stunning landscape remains unspoiled for children and grandchildren to enjoy as we once did.
