The Issue

We, the students of the University of Illinois at Chicago, are coming together to advocate for the preservation of the Italian and Italian American Studies department and minor in response to the recent proposal to eliminate certain languages and LAS departments. Maintaining literature, linguistic, and cultural programs at UIC is essential, as they equip students with the tools to engage with diverse perspectives, fostering critical thinking and global awareness. The dedicated professors within these programs have a profound impact on students' lives, well-being, and the campus community by offering mentorship, creating a supportive environment, and encouraging personal growth. The Italian department, its language program, and its committed faculty have had an immeasurable impact on both the UIC community and the greater Chicago area. This program serves as a crucial link between UIC and the residents of Little Italy, strengthening the bond between the university and the Italian American community throughout the city.

The professors and the program itself have cultivated strong connections among students from diverse backgrounds, offering opportunities for language acquisition, cultural events like the Piazza Conversation Hour, and mentorship through the Italian Club. Additionally, the Italian Studies minor has been recognized as an outstanding program, receiving high praise in the most recent external reviews of the Hispanic and Italian Studies departments in 2016 and 2024. This acclaim is also reflected in the faculty-directed study abroad program, established in 2002, which holds the distinction of being the longest-running faculty-led program at the university. The passion, dedication, and care demonstrated by the faculty have left a lasting impact on every student fortunate enough to participate in the Italian Studies program.

The Italian department faces significant vulnerability due to the absence of tenured faculty, leaving it at risk for defunding and potential elimination. Unlike other language programs that benefit from the advocacy channels provided by tenured professors, the Italian department lacks these critical support systems. Despite this, the faculty representing the program are highly accomplished, with several receiving prestigious awards such as the AATI Dante Award and the UIC Silver Circle Award. These professors are known for their innovative teaching styles, which have had a positive and lasting impact on the university community, further underscoring the importance and value of the Italian program.

Immediate advocacy is crucial to protect the Italian department and all other affected departments due to the upcoming decisions regarding the proposal to eliminate certain languages and LAS programs. With these decisions imminent, swift action is necessary to preserve these valuable departments and professors, which are essential in fostering cultural understanding and critical thinking. The unique contributions of the Italian department, alongside its faculty and programs, must be safeguarded to maintain the diversity and intellectual vibrancy at UIC.

Eliminating this program would not only deprive current and future students of invaluable opportunities but also sever a critical cultural bridge between generations. The Italian department has provided a sense of belonging, pride, and cultural understanding that extends far beyond Italian Americans and Italian international students; it enriches our entire campus community. The prospect of losing this program is deeply concerning, and we are determined to fight for its future. We firmly believe that preserving this program is essential to maintaining the diversity, history, and vibrancy of UIC.
