The Issue

We are residents in and around the historic central city neighborhood of Ash Street and other Columbia concerned citizens. We cherish our unique neighborhood and chose to live here because of its character, charm, sense of strong community and lovely, (mostly) walkable streets. The undersigned are asking the Mayor, City Council and the City Manager to carefully consider our requests for improving and preserving Ash Street thru the Ash Street Improvement Project.

What We DON'T WANT (from the https://beheard.como.gov/ash-street-improvements "The project design includes construction of an 8-foot wide sidewalk along the north side of Ash Street to be utilized by both pedestrians and bicyclists. The design includes construction of a 5-foot wide sidewalk along the south side of Ash Street to fill in sidewalk gaps. In addition, the design includes a continuous bike lane along the south side of Ash Street. Finally, the design includes crosswalks with flashing beacons at the intersection with Redwood Road, Anderson Avenue and Alexander Avenue."

What the City fails to mention is that these plans necesitate the removal of over 100 trees along Ash as well as the taking of portions of front yards of Ash Street Residents.

What we DO WANT

1. Reclassification of Ash Street from a "Major Collector" roadway (like Broadway, College, Forum, Old 63) to a "Neighborhood Collector." This reclassification would allow for our second request,

2. Traffic Calming and Crosswalk Safety Improvements such as speed bumps, crosswalks, pedestrian crossing signs and repair of existing sidewalks

3. Protection of Trees and Private Property.

Please sign this petition if you would like the city to listen to the concerns and wishes of Ash Street residents and neighbors.
