Protect the Historic Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building from Further Damage and Neglect

Petition by Smart Capital Investments

The Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building, an iconic landmark in downtown Los Angeles, is at risk of further damage due to tenant negligence and lack of proper preservation efforts. This historic structure, built in 1931 by renowned architects Parkinson & Parkinson, is a symbol of Los Angeles’ emergence as a financial hub on the West Coast. The building embodies the city's ambition, growth, and cultural heritage with its striking granite facade, intricate bas-reliefs by Salvatore Scarpitta, and soaring 40-foot ceilings.

Unfortunately, this landmark has suffered due to years of neglect and misuse. The current tenant, Exchange LA, has operated a nightclub within the building’s trading floors, subjecting it to excessive vibrations and loud music that have potentially compromised its structural integrity. In January 2024, a section of the historic ceiling collapsed during an event, raising significant safety concerns and highlighting the risks associated with improper use of this treasured site.

Despite being designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1979 and benefiting from a conservation easement protecting its exterior, the building’s interior remains vulnerable. The Los Angeles Conservancy has expressed concerns about its deteriorating state and is urging immediate action to preserve its historic features before they are lost forever.

Why This Matters:

The Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building is a vital piece of the city’s history and identity. Landmark preservation fosters economic revitalization, tourism, and cultural appreciation. The nightclub’s operations have potentially led to structural damage and potential safety hazards.

The upcoming public hearing on December 2, 2025 at 4:30pm, at Los Angeles City Hall (200 North Spring Street, 10th Floor, Room 1010, Los Angeles, CA 90012), held by the Central Los Angeles Area Planning Commission, marks a pivotal moment in determining the future use of this historic site.

We Demand:

Immediate Action to Halt Further Damage, the tenant’s operations must be reassessed to ensure the building’s safety and preservation.
Comprehensive Structural and Historical Review – Experts must assess the full extent of damage and recommend necessary restorations.
A Long-Term Preservation Plan – The city must enforce stronger protections for the building’s interior to maintain its cultural and architectural significance.

Public Involvement in Decision-Making – Angelenos must have a say in how this landmark is preserved and repurposed for the benefit of the community.

This is a defining moment for Los Angeles. We must choose to protect our history rather than let it be eroded by negligence and profit-driven misuse. Join us in urging city officials to take decisive action to preserve the Los Angeles Stock Exchange Building!
