The Issue

Nestled in the heart of our village lies a cherished symbol of our community's faith and history—the historic Baptist Chapel. For generations, it has stood as a beacon of hope and a place of worship, supporting the spiritual needs of our small but dedicated local congregation. Today, however, this invaluable landmark faces the threat of closure, and with it, the loss of a cornerstone of our village heritage and community life.

Built in the early 19th century, our chapel has borne witness to countless weddings, funerals , and other life events that have woven the fabric of our community. Its architecture and ambiance are not just a testament to a rich history, but a daily reminder of our shared traditions and values. Losing the chapel would mean losing a part of who we are, both as individuals and as a community.

As well as the enduring regular services, the chapel has continued (within in the last few years) to host weddings and funerals. Many ancestors of the village community are laid to rest in the adjoining graveyard, where a glance at the gravestones reveal a wealth of local names still represented in the current village community. While the managing trust acknowledges the importance of the graveyard, they propose to sell the chapel building for residential development, which we oppose. The chapel continues to host weddings and funerals as well as regular Sunday services.

This chapel is the only historic non conformist chapel in the village and one of very few in the local area.

The proposed closure is due to funding pressures and declining attendance, challenges faced by many rural churches. However, these issues aren't insurmountable. We propose a plan to boost community support and explore fundraising and grants.  By reaching out to current and former residents and history enthusiasts, we can revive interest and participation.

We are seeking support from local government and heritage organisations to, ensure it receives the attention and funding required. Additionally, introducing a scheme encouraging local donations can further secure its future.

We implore our fellow residents and supporters to stand with us. By adding your signature to this petition, you're taking a vital step in protecting a timeless treasure from disappearing into the pages of history. Stand with us to keep our chapel's doors open and its congregation alive. Please sign and share this petition to safeguard our village heritage.
