The Issue

I pen this as an earnest plea from a resident of a peaceful village that has recently become a haven for an escapee— a Harris Hawk. This bird of prey has found solace among us after escaping captivity. However, its capricious behavior, such as sporadic attacks on people and swiping hats has alarmed some.

As per reports of the American Ornithologists’ Union, Harris Hawks are social, intelligent birds that are not innately man-eaters. This disturbance may be due to its readjustment from captivity to the wild. Therefore, instead of a death sentence, it deserves understanding. A falconer is currently attempting to pacify the situation and needs additional time to do so.

This issue personally hits me as I stand by the belief that every living being has a right to live, humans or wild animals such as our Harris Hawk. Hawks are beings of immense ecological value contributing significantly in controlling rodent populations. Punishing the bird for its former captor's negligence and not providing it ample chance and time to revert to its natural habitat is inhumane and unfair.

For these reasons, let's collectively urge our community leaders to provide the necessary time for the falconer to carry out his work, and have wildlife experts assess and address the behavior of the Harris Hawk. Please stand with me and sign this petition to safeguard the hawk's life and maintain peace in our village.
