Protect the green belt land from development

The Issue

For as long as I can remember, Hollywall Lane’s fields have been just that—lovely expanses where countless children, including my sister, my disabled brother, and I, have enjoyed our days. We've rolled in the grass bales, played cricket, rounders, and football, sprinted across wide open spaces, and even had picnics under the lush sky. These fields have been a sanctuary for our innocence and laughter, nurturing memories that last a lifetime.

But beyond our cherished childhood moments, the fields teem with vibrant life. They are a refuge for beautiful wildlife; we've marvelled as foxes hunt and teach their young, as bats dance in the twilight, and as various birds fill the air with songs. These natural wonders unfold right before our eyes from my parents' house, offering a daily spectacle of nature that enriches our community’s life.

Now, the threat looms large. The proposal to replace these verdant lands with housing is not only an attack on our memories and enjoyment, but it risks decimating unique ecosystems and depriving future generations of their right to open green spaces.

The National Planning Policy Framework asserts the protection of green belt land, recognising its critical role in preserving natural beauty, ensuring biodiversity, providing habitats, and supporting environmental health. Development on green belt areas should be resisted unless in exceptional circumstances, which this project does not meet.

Furthermore, studies indicate that once green belt land is developed, it is rarely, if ever, returned to its natural state. This irreversible loss could contribute to the growing crisis of diminished biodiversity and green spaces in our ever-urbanizing landscape.

We urge local authorities and planning committees to reconsider and halt the planned housing developments on our beloved Hollywall Lane fields. There are viable alternatives to explore, including redeveloping brownfield sites that do not encroach on precious ecosystems or community spaces.

By signing this petition, you are voicing your support to protect these irreplaceable green belt lands and preserving a vital piece of our community heritage for future generations. Your signature is a stand for wildlife, for children’s play areas, and for the nature that sustains us all. Please sign and help us safeguard the Hollywall Lane fields.
