The Issue

Recently, one of the teacher in the history department at Barrington High School was placed on administrative leave. The reason? Comments he made on his personal social media expressing his own political views.  The video, while delving into divisive subject matter regarding recent events, did not call for violence, and most importantly, did not violate BHS social media policy, policy which states explicitly that "its staff and volunteers have a First Amendment right to speak out as private citizens on matters of public concern." By putting him on administrative leave for his statements, the school not only violates their own policy on staff social media usage, but also flagrantly defies the first amendment right to free speech and expression. As someone who was in this teacher's class, he was an excellent and hardworking member of Barrington High School. He enjoyed teaching me and my classmates, and was integral to this school's teachers union. I urge all of you, show the administration at BHS that free speech matters to you.
