Protect the Character and Future of Suffern, New York: Stop LLCs' Bulk Buying of Homes
Protect the Character and Future of Suffern, New York: Stop LLCs' Bulk Buying of Homes
The Issue
We call on elected leaders to take immediate legislative and policy actions to stop bulk purchases of residential homes by LLCs in village of Suffern in order to protect the character, safety, and long-term stability of our community.
Suffern Village has long been a highly desirable place to live and raise a family, known for its strong sense of community, safety, and excellent schools. However, in recent years the village has increasingly been affected by bulk buying of houses by LLCs.
These LLCs rent to multiple families or individuals, often resulting in overcrowding as well as straining the village’s infrastructure and community resources. LLCs appear to have little or no interest in uplifting the neighborhood and/or properly maintaining properties, despite fines. Because of LLCs bulk purchases, families/ individuals who want to purchase their primary residence and invest in Suffern are being priced out and unable to buy in our community.
Like a domino effect, it is beginning to change the rural village character. Residents report high turnover of neighbors, which reduces the feeling of safety. It has also contributed to declining school ratings. These are issues that matter greatly to families who choose to build their lives here long term.
We, homeowners and residents are furious not only because our property values are affected, but because the safety, quality of life, and overall neighborhood quality are at risk, and our concerns are not being addressed effectively. We believe Suffern is worth protecting and strengthening for our current and future families.
We understand there are zoning complexities and restrictive laws that limit how much control our local governments have. We also recognize that fines are being issued for violations and that rental registration in our village was created in an effort to address the situation. However, it is clearly NOT ENOUGH.
Most of us are busy with work and life and cannot attend town meetings to voice our concerns. That is exactly why we elect leaders to represent us.
These LLC purchases must be stopped. Yes, it may be challenging under existing laws, but it is our leaders’ responsibility to develop EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS, even if it means working to change existing laws to benefit the communities they represent.
We call for effective action to stop LLCs from buying up homes in village of Suffern in order to preserve it as a place for families and long-term residents.
We, homeowners and residents of Suffern are closely monitoring how our concerns are addressed and expect leadership to prioritize the long term health, safety, and stability of our community.
NO money is needed for this petition. I'm ONLY COLLECTING SIGNATURES from Suffern residents. Any contribution shown on this page goes to Change.org for promotion of the petition and does NOT go to the petition organizer.
