The Australian National Flag is a symbol of our unity, pride, and heritage. It stands as a testament to the freedom and values that define our nation. However, there is currently no specific legislation that prevents individuals from intentionally desecrating and vandalising this emblem of national significance. This petition seeks to make it illegal to carry out such acts by amending the Flags Act 1953.

In recent years, there have been numerous incidents where the Australian National Flag has been desecrated in public demonstrations or in acts of vandalism.

Countries around the world, including New Zealand, France and Germany, have laws that protect their National Flags from similar acts of desecration. Implementing such laws would align Australia with international standards and reinforce the respect towards our national symbol. It would also act as a deterrent against these acts of vandalism.
