The Issue

The Aravalli Hills are more than just a scenic backdrop to those of us in Northern India; they are the very lungs of our region, sustaining the lives of countless people, diverse wildlife, and rich vegetation. Recent rulings have placed 95% of this vital range out of government protection, casting a dark shadow over the future of the hills and the communities they support.

The Aravallis are a crucial ecological barrier preventing the expansion of the desert and play a significant role in maintaining climate balance. According to environmental studies, these hills significantly affect humidity levels, temperature, and even prevent the advancement of the Thar Desert into the fertile plains of the Indo-Gangetic basin. Now, with the recent ruling, this natural shield is under threat from unscrupulous elements seeking to exploit the land for commercial gain.

This decision jeopardises not just the environment but also the livelihoods of those dependent on it. Communities residing in and around the Aravallis depend on this landscape for water, resources, and cultural heritage. The hills also provide sanctuary to a range of wildlife, including several critically endangered species that may lose their protected habitat.

Environmental activists and concerned citizens are alarmed at the potential for deforestation, illegal mining, and construction, which could lead to irreversible damage. Numerous reports indicate that such activities not only devastate local ecosystems but also lead to severe water scarcity and deteriorating air quality, impacting thousands of lives.

We understand that development is necessary but it should not come at the cost of our environment and future generations. We request for an alternative approach that includes sustainable development practices, strict regulation of non-renewable resource extraction, and an increase in forested areas to both conserve the environment and support local economies through eco-tourism and sustainable resource management.

Let us urge the Honourable Supreme Court of India to reconsider and reverse its ruling. It is crucial to restore government protection to the Aravalli Hills, ensuring they remain a thriving biological and cultural treasure, not only for us but for the countless generations to follow.

Please sign this petition as a call to action to protect the Aravalli Hills, to safeguard our environment, and to ensure a sustainable future for all. Let us voice our concerns and make a stand for our environment, our livelihoods, and the legacy we leave behind for our children.
