Protect the amenity and wildlife of Cooroy from an excessive housing development

The issue

As a long-time resident of the unique locale of Cooroy QLD, Australia, I am deeply troubled by a proposed large scale high-medium density housing development on green space zoned for community use at 62 Lake Macdonald Drive. This project entails clearing natural habitats including grasslands, a planted pine forest, and several mature native trees including Gympie messmates and Bunya pine to build community and affordable housing on a scale and density way in excess of what's reasonable for the site, further displacing our local wildlife, already struggling due to recent residential expansions.

But before adding the needs of new residents from approximately 160 dwellings to already stretched infrastructure in our town, this development promises to bring an anticipated five years of relentless construction noise and a non-stop flow of vehicles, vastly changing the peaceful atmosphere we've cherished for so long. Besides disturbing our daily comfort in our homes, we must also think about our natural environment's health. Australia’s high rate of land clearing has resulted in the country having some of the highest extinction rates worldwide, with over 100 animal species lost over the last two centuries. The area for the proposed development is a sanctuary to many creatures and plays a vital role in preserving our region's biodiversity within the UNESCO Noosa Biosphere.  Removing these trees won't only affect the wildlife, but also erase a part of what makes our town uniquely beautiful.

This petition is a plea for reconsideration. Let's preserve the unique peace and beauty of Cooroy and its surroundings. People need to live somewhere but let's keep infill development at a scale that preserves the amenity of our town. Let's also protect our wildlife that’s already been pushed out by other residential development.

Let us make our voices heard to the council and halt the planned excessive housing development in its tracks.
