Protect the 14th Amendment birthright citizenship

Protect the 14th Amendment birthright citizenship
The Issue
As a proud member of the South Asian community in Texas, I am deeply concerned about the ongoing discussions threatening to undermine the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees birthright citizenship. Our community is one of the fastest-growing in the state, deeply woven into the cultural, economic, and social fabric of Texas. Any attempt to alter this foundational right jeopardizes not only our future but the principles of equality and justice that the United States stands for.
The 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868, was introduced to rectify the injustices faced by previously enslaved individuals, ensuring that all persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens. Over the years, birthright citizenship has been crucial in providing millions of individuals, especially children of immigrants like many of us, the stability and security to thrive in this country. It has been a beacon of hope and fairness for families seeking a better life and contributes to the diverse and dynamic society we live in today.
Efforts to repeal or modify this amendment could fracture families, discourage immigration, and create an underclass of individuals without citizenship rights. According to the Migration Policy Institute, the U.S. would face severe economic and moral repercussions by denying citizenship to children of immigrants, which in turn would affect labor markets, tax revenues, and violate human rights commitments.
Our community, especially in Texas, has contributed enormously to the state's development. From entrepreneurial ventures to critical professional services, South Asians play an integral role in the state’s economy. Stripping away the right of our future generations to call America their home would be a grave disservice to the values the country upholds.
I urge lawmakers, policy influencers, and all caring citizens to recognize the profound importance of protecting the 14th Amendment. We must honor our commitment to inclusion, respect, and equal opportunity. Sign this petition to safeguard the birthright citizenship that is crucial to the fabric of American democracy. Let's stand together for a future that values all its people, regardless of their heritage. Please sign and share this petition to ensure we protect the rights of future generations in Texas and across the nation.
