Protect tenants’ security screen doors on Willow Ave
The Issue
My name is Mitchell Farias, and I proudly serve as both a resident of and the property manager for the Willow Ave complex in La Puente, California. For over 30 years, security screen doors have been a staple of our building, offering crucial protection and peace of mind to our diverse community of tenants. Many of our residents are elderly, including single women, families with children, and individuals with special needs, all of whom rely on the security these doors provide.
Recently, there's been an alarming move to remove these essential security screen doors, a decision that not only puts our tenants at risk but also undermines our community's safety. Studies show that visible security measures like screen doors can reduce crime rates significantly, deterring potential intruders and providing a sense of security to residents. The safety and security of our community should be a top priority, and removing these doors disregards the fundamental rights of tenants to feel secure in their own homes.
As a property manager who deeply cares about the wellbeing of our tenants, I’ve seen firsthand the sense of safety these security doors provide. Our elderly residents, some of whom have health issues, find comfort in knowing their homes are protected. Families with young children can sleep more soundly at night, and our residents with special needs feel a vital layer of protection.
We urge the City of La Puente and relevant authorities to reconsider this decision and uphold the right of our tenants to maintain security screen doors. We believe this can be achieved by recognizing tenant rights to security enhancements that are necessary given the demographics and specific needs of our community.
