Protect Tattooed Veterans and Workers from Appearance-Based Discrimination

Protect Tattooed Veterans and Workers from Appearance-Based Discrimination
The Issue
I’m a U.S. Army Infantry veteran. I served my country with honor, survived combat, and carry permanent reminders of that sacrifice in the form of ink—tattoos that represent brotherhood, pain, faith, and purpose. They tell my story, not a lack of professionalism. But in today’s job market, especially in conservative or corporate environments, tattoos are still frowned upon. Many of us are passed over, judged, or written off—simply because we chose to express our identity through body art. Meanwhile, we live in a country that promotes diversity and inclusion. Gender identity, hair texture, and cultural backgrounds are protected—and rightfully so. But how are tattoos, especially for veterans, still excluded from that protection? It’s time for change. I’m asking lawmakers, employers, and the public to recognize that tattoos—especially those tied to cultural, spiritual, or military identity—deserve protection from appearance-based discrimination. Let’s stop judging someone’s capability by the art on their skin. Let’s protect workers—veterans, artists, survivors, and professionals alike who proudly wear their story. Let’s push for updated appearance discrimination protections, just like we’ve done for hair and gender identity. If you believe someone shouldn’t be disqualified from opportunity based on tattoos—sign this, share it, and speak up.
