Protect Syracuse Renters: Advocate for Good Cause Eviction Laws Now!
The Issue
The City of Syracuse is looking to begin revitalization in Salt Springs and Tipperary Hill - Far Westside for Wave 1, and Eastwood and Elmwood for Wave 2 of their Neighborhood Revitalization: Housing Strategy plans. This leaves many people in the most rundown, vulnerable and most frequently ignored neighborhoods to continue to deal with deplorable living conditions due to slum and absentee landlords while being exposed to lead, mold, maintenance repairs left unaddressed or unfinished, unsafe housing and unjust evictions.
Why is this important?
Please sign this form if you do not agree with the areas considered for immediate work in Syracuse's Housing Strategy Plan and if you would like the Common Council to opt-in to Good Cause, giving renters protection from unjust or illegal evictions as well as giving them legal rights to withhold rental payments if repairs in the home are not made to ensure the safety of the housing.
Good Cause will also ensure landlords cannot jack up rent prices on residents but would have to stick to certain market rate adjustments that would allow them to continue to maintain and profit from their properties without causing the tenants undue financial strain. Considering the conditions of housing in Syracuse and Onondaga county as a whole, it only makes sense for Good Cause to be passed with the most protection to tenants possible.
We need to remove Syracuse from some of the worst "Top 10" lists in the country, and passing and enforcing Good Cause is the first step in making this happen!
