Protect Student Transportation for French Immersion High Schoolers

Protect Student Transportation for French Immersion High Schoolers
The Issue
York Region District School Board is currently discussing a change that would remove school bus transportation for French Immersion high school students from Georgina and require students to use public transit to get to their designated school in the south end of Newmarket. A decision on this proposal is expected in early 2026 and, if implemented, would affect many students starting in September 2026.
Students in Keswick must travel to Newmarket—four towns away—to continue French Immersion. Under the proposed change, many grade 9 students as young as 13 would be expected to rely on public transit. Georgina has limited transit, minimal street lighting, and long travel distances. Many students would need to leave home as early as 6:30 a.m. and walk to transit stops in the dark for much of the school year. This is not a safe or reasonable expectation for young adolescents.
While this change may not affect all students, it will impact the majority of French Immersion students in Georgina. By signing, you are showing your support for safe, reliable school bus transportation and asking the Board to consider multiple pickup locations across the community.
