Protect Student Loan Borrowers First! Demand Transparency and Oversight
The Issue
More than 40 million student loan borrowers are about to be affected by one of the biggest changes to the system in decades.
The U.S. Department of Education has announced that they plan to transfer the $1.7 trillion student loan portfolio to the Treasury Department without a clear timeline, public plan, or consistent communication.
At the same time, a congressional watchdog found that oversight of the student loan system has been scaled back after deep staffing cuts left too few people to oversee servicers.
And this is all happening as major policy changes are set to reshape the student loan system. Recent legislation, including the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” eliminates several repayment options and restructures how borrowers repay their loans, so this interagency agreement comes as millions are about to navigate new terms, timelines, and requirements with limited guidance.
Taken together, these changes raise serious concerns about errors, misinformation, and financial harm to borrowers.
Regardless, the Department of Education says it is going to move forward. And that being the case, it cannot happen without transparency, oversight, and clear communication. A system of this size which impacts tens of millions of people must be held to a basic standard of accountability before changes are implemented - not after problems arise.
We are calling on the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of the Treasury to:
1. Release a clear, public plan and timeline for the student loan transition
2. Restore strong oversight of loan servicers to prevent errors and misinformation
3. Communicate directly with borrowers about what will change and when
4. Provide ongoing public reporting on any issues that impact borrowers
We also call on Congress to provide oversight and ensure accountability throughout this process.
Sign this petition to demand transparency, oversight, and accountability before millions of people are left dealing with the consequences.
