Growing up with autism and ADHD, I have faced numerous challenges in navigating daily life. As a low-income individual living in affordable housing funded by the federal government, the assistance I receive from SSI, SNAP/EBT, and Medicaid is not just beneficial; it's crucial for my daily life and well-being. These programs provide the necessary support to manage my health, help pay for the food I eat, and afford basic living expenses. The possibility of potential cuts to these benefits by the Trump administration has been a looming threat, and the consequences could be devastating for me and others in South Carolina who rely on them.

In South Carolina, thousands of residents, including disabled individuals, the elderly, and low-income families, depend on these vital programs to live with dignity and maintain their health and well-being. Statistics from the SC Department of Health and Human Services reveal that SNAP alone helps feed approximately 567,310 South Carolina citizens who receive these benefits. This translates to roughly 10.8% of the state's population.  Additionally, Medicaid supports over 1 million residents, offering essential healthcare services that would otherwise be unaffordable.

The threat to these programs has dire implications. Removing or reducing SSI, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits could lead to increased poverty rates, higher healthcare costs, and ultimately, a decrease in the quality of life and financial security for countless families. It's important to understand that these are not mere statistics or numbers; they represent real people — our neighbors, family members, and friends.

To counter this issue, action must be taken at both the state and national levels. We need our local and state officials to stand firm against any proposed cuts and to advocate fiercely for policies that preserve and strengthen these essential services. It's important to push for legislative measures that protect these benefits, ensuring they remain intact for the vulnerable populations that depend on them.

We urge Governor Henry McMaster and South Carolina lawmakers to prioritize the needs of their constituents by safeguarding these programs. By doing so, they will not only protect the physical and mental well-being of South Carolina's most vulnerable populations but also enhance the financial stability of our communities.
