The Issue

The school board held a meeting on April 29th, during which they spoke in favor of:   -Following through with cuts to the SHS full-time equivalent (FTE) teacher numbers   -Removing Spanish 1   -Increasing class sizes   -Removing 5 English sections   -Removing 0.4 science FTEs   -Non-renewing teachers who work tirelessly to ensure a quality education for their students   -Cutting teacher hours, which stops eligibility for health insurance  Our teachers are not numbers, statistics, or figures on a spreadsheet. These reductions outpace federal cuts and create dangerous classroom environments, especially in the theater tech department and science classes. The actions that the school board has spoken in favor of will have dire consequences if voted for, not just for the teachers, but for the students as well. Shorewood School District prides itself on its amazing teachers and quality education, but these qualities will be jeopardized if teachers are cut and class sizes are increased. The previous referendum promised to fund quality staff and uphold Shorewood’s reputation of excellence, and this promise has completely fallen through. Taxpayer dollars paid for a referendum; the least the school board could do is uphold their promise. PLEASE SHOW UP TO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING AT 7 PM ON TUESDAY, MAY 13 IN THE SHS LIBRARY (LMC) TO MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD BEFORE THE FINAL VOTE!
