The Issue

Sheffield is renowned for its vibrant history and beautiful landscapes, often revered as the 'Outdoor City'. Our city is blessed with green spaces that provide not only scenery but also a sanctuary for wildlife and a breath of fresh air for its residents. Its importance as a green lung between more densely populated areas is a huge benefit to all Sheffield residents.

However, the integrity of these green spaces is under threat. Sheffield City Council, despite having voted for a 'brownfield first' policy that prioritises developing previously used land, is now ignoring this promise. Shockingly, many voted in favour of this plan including the Green Party, going against their party's manifesto of protecting green spaces. Sheffield City Council are considering using Green Belt areas for development, particularly in two postcode districts, with plans to announce further inappropriate development in other postcode districts in the near future.

These Green Belt areas play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance, providing habitats for countless species and offering locals a tranquil escape from the bustling city life. Once these areas are demolished and paved over, they are lost forever.

Beyond the environmental cost, these rural areas simply lack the infrastructure to support such inappropriate developments. Many of the proposed areas are served by narrow country roads already struggling with congestion. Access to essential services such as doctors, schools and utilities like water and sewage is limited or overstretched. These Green Belt areas are also rich in heritage and local history; parts of Sheffield’s identity that risk being erased by overdevelopment. Building on these sites would place unsustainable pressure on existing services and diminish the character and liveability of surrounding communities.

The current stance of the Council risks transforming Sheffield into a city reminiscent of Wigan, where warehouses line backyards instead of greenery: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0r7lqjg4y4o

This is not just a policy decision; it’s about the future of our city and its identity as the Outdoor City. Preserving the Green Belt and stopping inappropriate development isn't just a matter of protecting the environment, it’s about safeguarding our heritage and quality of life for all Sheffield residents. It's about future generations having the same opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty that Sheffield offers today.

We need your support to encourage Sheffield City Council to honour their commitment to the brownfield first policy and abandon plans to build on the Green Belt and stop all inappropriate development. Let us all come together as one city to protect the identity and environment of Sheffield. Sign this petition to show that we stand united in our love for our city’s green spaces and for responsible urban planning. Together, we can ensure that Sheffield remains a haven for nature and a respite for all its residents.

It might not be your area today, but they could be coming for you tomorrow.

We call on Sheffield City Council to:

  1. Pause and review all planned green belt developments across the city.
  2. Prioritise brownfield sites and sustainable regeneration before approving any new green belt loss.
  3. Restore transparency and accountability in how planning decisions are made — listening to the voices of the people who live here.

This is not about opposition for opposition’s sake. It’s about responsibility, fairness, and care — the values Sheffield was built on.
