PROTECT SECTION 504

The Issue

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 has been pivotal in providing civil rights protections to disabled individuals, ensuring we are not excluded from participation in, benefiting from, or subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance. The potential decision in the Texas v. Becerra case could pose a risk to these protections.

The statute of this Act, particularly Section 504, has tirelessly ensured long-lasting, vital protections for disabled citizens since it passed nearly five decades ago. It is estimated that one in four adults in America are living with a disability. These persons depend greatly on federal and state protections, and a move to overturn Section 504 would significantly compromise their rights and hinder their opportunities.

We cannot afford to regress in our strides towards inclusivity and equal rights for all. Any action against Section 504 would not only go against the spirit of fairness and equality that America stands for, but would also impact millions of lives negatively. It is imperative that we stand up to protect this law.

Power resides in our collective voices. Together, we can fight to maintain these fair and equitable protections.
