Protect Religious Freedom: Oppose the Hanuman Statue in Sugar Land, Texas

The Issue

We, the undersigned, express our deep concern over the installation of the 90-foot Hanuman statue at the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple in Sugar Land, Texas. While we respect the rights of individuals to practice their faith, we believe that placing such a prominent religious symbol on public land infringes upon the religious freedoms of those who do not share the same beliefs.

In Canada, similar issues have arisen, leading to debates about the appropriateness of religious symbols in public spaces. For instance, in Montreal, a statue of Sir John A. Macdonald was removed due to its association with colonialism and its impact on Indigenous communities Chatelaine. These instances highlight the importance of considering the diverse beliefs of all citizens when erecting public monuments.

We urge the local government of Sugar Land to reconsider the placement of the Hanuman statue on public land. Religious symbols should be displayed in private spaces, such as temples or churches, where individuals can choose to engage with them, rather than imposing them on the broader public.

By signing this petition, we advocate for the protection of religious freedoms and the preservation of a secular public space that respects the diverse beliefs of all citizens.
