Protect Real People: Stop the Spread of AI Deepfake Videos

The Issue

As one of the UK's Youngest royal journalist and YouTuber, committed to truthful reporting and educating the public about the Royal Family, I’ve witnessed a troubling rise in deepfake and AI-generated videos being shared as real across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms. This includes many videos featuring the Royal Children and other members of the Royal Family.

If people are going to report on the Royal Family, they must do so using real photos and authentic footage—not deepfakes or AI-generated videos that misrepresent them. These fake videos spread misinformation and damage the credibility of genuine reporting.

In addition, synthetic voices created by AI to imitate real people are increasingly used without clear disclosure. We call on creators to clearly label any use of AI-generated voices and specify when AI is used in edits or content production.

While social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok have introduced features requiring creators to label AI-generated content, their ability to enforce these rules is limited. Many creators ignore these requirements, and the overwhelming volume of deepfake videos uploaded daily makes it impossible for platforms to police effectively on their own.

This is why government enforcement is essential. Only governments can enact and enforce laws that ensure people stop using deepfakes and AI-generated content of real individuals without clear labeling, and prevent this misleading content from being presented as real.

We demand strict global regulations that require:

Mandatory, clear labeling on all AI-generated or deepfake videos and synthetic voices, so viewers know the content is artificial and fictional.

Transparent disclosure inside videos or edits that contain AI-generated elements.

Legal consequences for distributing misleading deepfakes or synthetic voice content without clear disclaimers.

Protection for minors, public figures, and deceased individuals from unauthorized AI-generated depictions.

Government enforcement of these laws to ensure social media platforms are supported in preventing the spread of misleading or false deepfake and AI content.

AI is a powerful tool for creativity and innovation, but transparency and responsibility are essential. People deserve to know when content is AI-generated fiction, not real footage or real voices.

It’s time for governments worldwide to take decisive action and enforce regulations—because social media platforms alone can only do so much.
