The Issue

President Trump is using executive orders to punish law firms that represent people or causes he opposes—including immigrant rights, voting access, and civil liberties. His actions are already having a chilling effect: law firms are backing out of pro bono work out of fear of political retribution.

These attacks aren’t just about the firms—they’re about silencing dissent, limiting access to justice, and deterring lawyers from challenging unconstitutional government policies. Civil rights organizations say they’re now struggling to get legal support, even for high-impact cases. Some firms have turned them down explicitly because of political risk.

This kind of intimidation threatens the foundation of our legal system. Pro bono work exists to ensure equal justice under law, especially for the most vulnerable. If we allow political interference in case selection, we erode the entire idea of fair and impartial representation.

We’re calling on Congress, the courts, and bar associations to:

  • Publicly condemn the use of presidential power to intimidate legal professionals
  • Defend the right of law firms to take on pro bono work without political retaliation
  • Strengthen legal protections for firms and attorneys representing politically sensitive cause

Sign now to protect equal justice—and ensure law firms can continue defending our rights.
