Protect Pets & Wildlife: Limit Fireworks in West Palm Beach to Designated Areas
Protect Pets & Wildlife: Limit Fireworks in West Palm Beach to Designated Areas
The Issue
Fireworks terrify pets and wildlife, causing panic, injuries, and lost animals every year. We urge the City of West Palm Beach to limit fireworks to July 4th and New Year’s only — and only in designated public areas.
Fireworks may look like celebration to us — but to animals, they sound like danger.
Every year in West Palm Beach, pets tremble, hide, escape their homes, or injure themselves trying to flee loud, unpredictable fireworks. Veterinarians and animal shelters report spikes in emergency visits and lost animals during fireworks holidays. Wildlife and livestock suffer severe stress, abandon nests, or experience fatal reactions.
This is preventable.
We are not asking to eliminate celebrations — we are asking for responsible, compassionate regulation.
What We Are Asking the City of West Palm Beach to Do
We respectfully request that the City Commission adopt an ordinance that:
- Allows consumer fireworks only on July 4th and New Year’s Eve/Day
- Restricts fireworks use to designated public areas, such as approved city parks
- Prohibits fireworks use in residential neighborhoods
- Establishes clear time limits and enforcement to protect public safety and animal welfare
Why This Matters
- Pets experience fireworks as uncontrollable explosions, triggering panic and trauma
- Many animals attempt to escape, resulting in injuries or permanent loss
- Wildlife suffers extreme stress, especially nesting birds and small mammals
- Fireworks increase fire risk and emergency calls in residential areas
- Individuals with PTSD, sensory sensitivities, and young children are also affected
Cities across the country are moving toward safer, centralized celebrations that protect residents while still honoring tradition. West Palm Beach can lead with compassion while keeping our community safe.
Our Request
We ask the Mayor and City Commission of West Palm Beach to review this petition, engage with animal welfare professionals, and take action to implement reasonable fireworks regulations that balance celebration with responsibility.
Animals cannot speak for themselves. This petition gives them a voice.
