Protect pets during domestic separations

The Issue

My beloved dog was abandoned to die in my house for three agonizing weeks without food or water after a court ruling separated me from my home and allowed my ex-partner to take possession. This period of neglect and suffering for my pet could have been avoided had provisions been in place to ensure my dog’s welfare. Police ignored my continual concerns for Dillon's wellbeing.

In numerous cases, pets are often collateral damage during domestic separations. Incorrect assumptions are made that an ex-partner, awarded temporary possession of a shared home, will care for any animals left behind. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Pets can, and do, suffer the consequences of this oversight, resulting in neglect, maltreatment, and even death.

We need legislation that mandates specific and actionable steps are taken to ensure the safety and well-being of pets in the wake of domestic separations. This includes assessing the capability and willingness of the remaining partner to care for any animals and, if necessary, the appointment of a responsible third party or organization to oversee the pet's well-being.

Statistics show over 70% of households in the U.K. have a pet. Yet, legal protections for these animals during domestic transitions are inadequate. Dogs, cats, and other animals are sentient beings who depend on us for their care and deserve protection under the law.

By holding courts accountable to address these gaps, we can prevent senseless suffering. Laws must require detailed pet care plans during any legal separation, ensuring pets are given to those who can provide proper care or placed in temporary foster arrangements with authorized and caring entities.

Please join me in advocating for stronger protections for pets impacted by domestic separations. Your signature could help save countless animals from neglect and create a standard for humane treatment in family law. Let's ensure our furry family members are protected and cherished, not left behind in times of turmoil. Sign this petition today to demand change.
