Protect Paradise: End Toxic Fogging and Support Smart Mosquito Control in Sri Lanka

Protect Paradise: End Toxic Fogging and Support Smart Mosquito Control in Sri Lanka
The Issue
Sri Lanka is celebrated as the #1 island in the world — a haven of biodiversity, clean air, and natural beauty. But today, our skies are being filled with toxic mosquito fog that threatens everything we love about our island.
In support of the government’s #CleanSriLanka initiative — a bold step toward restoring health, beauty, and environmental integrity across the island — we believe there is a vital next move:
👉 Control mosquito breeding sites
👉 Embrace safe, science-backed mosquito control.
👉 Protect our people, ecosystems, and global reputation.
❗ Why This Matters:
Chemical fogging sprays neurotoxic pesticides like Malathion and Permethrin mixed with diesel fumes into the air we breathe — in our markets, schools, parks, and even tourist zones.
These substances are:
❌ Linked to cancer, respiratory illness, and neurological harm
❌ Banned or restricted in the EU, UK, Canada, Japan, and the US
❌ Harmful to pregnant women, children, and elders
❌ Devastating to bees, butterflies, frogs, and birds — our natural mosquito predators
Worse still, fogging doesn’t work. It kills only adult mosquitoes, not larvae — allowing populations to rebound rapidly, often with increased resistance.
✅ A Better Way — Already Proven:
Sri Lanka has already piloted safe, effective alternatives:
- Bti biolarvicides, with support from Cuba
- Wolbachia-infected mosquito releases, supported by the World Mosquito Program
- Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) trials backed by the International Agency IAEA
- Community-led cleanups guided by Public Health Inspectors (PHIs)
These methods have succeeded in cities around the world — from Singapore and Brazil to Kerala and Vietnam — and they align beautifully with Sri Lanka’s regenerative, science-based vision.
🟢 We Call For:
- An immediate halt to indiscriminate chemical fogging
- A national shift to biological mosquito control and source reduction
- Full transparency on pesticide use and public safety
- Support for green pest control enterprises and clean tourism standards
This is not a protest — it’s a proposal. A positive, science-based call to align mosquito control with the #CleanSriLanka goal.
Let’s make Sri Lanka transition fully to safe, sustainable mosquito control — for the health of our families, the future of our tourism, and the protection of our rich biodiversity.
Say no to toxic fogging. Say yes to a smarter, cleaner Sri Lanka.
