Protect Our Youth in Butler, GA — Before the Streets Do
The Issue
This is not about pointing fingers this is about taking a stand as parents and as a community.
Our youth in Butler, Georgia deserve more than just a high school diploma they deserve a future filled with opportunity, healing, and hope.
We’re not here to blame the school system. We know there are good teachers, counselors, and staff trying to help. But what happens when school ends? When they walk across that stage and enter a world with no support, no structure, and no safe outlets?
As a parent, I’ve seen firsthand how fast things can fall apart.
My son was drugged and what followed was a nightmare no mother should have to witness. He experienced hallucinations, anxiety attacks, suicidal thoughts and was in a full mental breakdown. I called for help. An ambulance took him to Upson Regional in Thomaston, GA, where he was denied the care he needed. Instead of receiving treatment, he was criminalized charged with assault, even though he was clearly under the influence of something he didn’t understand or choose.
After jail, the pain continued. We admitted him to a behavioral health facility for 30 days. He’s out now, but he’s still healing physically, emotionally, and mentally.
And my son is not the only one.
Peer pressure. Mental health. Learning disabilities. Coercion. Abuse. Our young people are facing so much more than we did, and they’re doing it with less.
We’re not saying it’s all on the school. As parents, we’re taking accountability. But what is there in this community to help guide them when we can’t do it alone?
No Boys and Girls Club
No community centers
No youth outreach programs
No mental health hubs
No job readiness training
Not even a playground or basketball court in the Housing Apartments
We are failing our youth outside of school and then we wonder why they fall into the streets.
So today, we’re standing up.
We, the concerned citizens of Butler, GA, are demanding:
Mentorship programs for ages 18–25 Community Center
Job readiness, life skills, and real mental health support
Safe spaces for youth beyond the school system
Protection against drugs, peer coercion, and abuse
Community partnerships that connect churches, business owners, and leaders with our youth
Because if these resources exist, why aren’t they reaching the ones who need them most?
This is not just a school issue it’s a community responsibility. We’ve seen what happens when the system is silent. Let’s be louder.
