Protect Our Woodland from Becoming a Waste Transfer Station

Protect Our Woodland from Becoming a Waste Transfer Station
The Issue
A serene wooded area, cherished by the local community in Maghull, Liverpool, and teeming with wildlife, is at imminent risk. This area, home to deer, nesting birds, red squirrels, hedgehogs, and badgers, is under threat of being transformed into a waste transfer station. In a major blow to the natural beauty of our community, the proposal includes felling trees that have been granted preservation orders. This concern is heightened by its proximity to Maghull High School, raising alarming questions about the potential impacts on the health of students and staff.
This land has already seen hundreds of tonnes of soil dumped illegally last year. We are in the dark regarding whether this material contains asbestos or other harmful chemicals. The lack of clear guidelines on drainage management exacerbates this threat, raising fears that potential contaminants might leach into Dover's Brook or disrupt the local ecosystem.
Constructing a waste transfer station here is not only an affront to the local environment but also poses serious risks to human health. With no transparent environmental checks and balances, moving forward with such a development could lead to irreversible consequences. Our community deserves better than living under the constant threat of unknown pollutants and losing a beautiful natural habitat treasured by local families.
Other factors to consider
- Infrastructure on the estate is not built to carry 200-plus tipper wagons a day, just going to one site on top of the businesses already operating here.
- There is no water supply in the application to facilitate vehicles being washed on & off site to stop the estate becoming a mud bath again, like it was in March 2024.
- There is no parking listed in the application. Are all the Tipper loads dropping off, just going to line up & down the Estate & Sefton Lane while waiting to enter the site, causing the whole area to come to a standstill, including Sefton Lane.
- There is no water supply in the application to facilitate the workforce being employed there or the visitors to the site for hygiene purposes.
- There has been no excavating to make sure the gases from the old tip have settled properly, as this land has never been developed since then.
- The hazards to pedestrians are immense. Traffic is increasing down Sefton Lane, Bridges Lane, Brickwall Lane, etc
- Who is monitoring what is hazardous & non-hazardous waste entering the site?
We call on the relevant authorities to halt this proposal immediately. Let us preserve our woodland, ensure the safety of Maghull High School’s students, and protect our environment for future generations. Sign this petition to voice your concern and demand action towards a sustainable and safe alternative. Your support can make a difference.
