Protect our Wildcat legacy in Plainfield, IL

Protect our Wildcat legacy in Plainfield, IL
The Issue
The Wildcat legacy is more than just a name; it’s an embodiment of the community spirit, academic excellence, and sportsmanship that has defined generations in Plainfield, IL. The proposal for a new middle school, which involves redrawing current school boundaries and removing Indian Trail Middle School from the green house, threatens to disrupt this established sense of unity that Wildcat families have cherished for years.
Changing the boundaries, specifically in the downtown area, would not only affect the relationships within the community but also weaken the shared Wildcat identity that has been cultivated over decades.
Current research suggests that students thrive in environments where they feel a sense of belonging and continuity. The kids proposed to rezone away from downtown will be doing so with 3 or fewer classmates and would be attending schools more than twice the distance of their current schools separating them from their roots, the community they have been a part of their entire lives.
Overall enrollment in D202 is down 4,400 students from 2015 and even with the projected increases, enrollment will still be down over 4,100 students 5 years from now. While some changes do need to be made within our current boundaries due to new growth in specific areas, overall lack of enrollment does not warrant adding an entire new building. Instead of pursuing the costly establishment of a new school, let us invest in resource enhancements and facility improvements within our existing schools. This approach would ensure that all students benefit equally from improved environments, not just one area. With adjustments to our current infrastructure, we can accommodate increased student populations. Slight boundary changes would impact far fewer students and families.
Join us in urging the Plainfield school district to reconsider the proposal for a new middle school. By prioritizing investments in current facilities and upholding existing boundaries, we can preserve the Wildcat legacy for current and future generations. Please sign this petition to show your support and protect a tradition that is at the heart of Plainfield's excellence and community spirit.
Impacted downtown area that should stay green:
East of the railroad tracks on Eastern, Route 126 & Naperville-Plainfield Road to 143rd St.
