Protect Our Students & Student Staff, and Hold MTSU HRL Accountable
The Issue
On July 24th, student staff RAs and RDs of Scarlett Commons at MTSU were informed that there had been "re-structuring in some RA assignments" that would result in the addition of [Redacted] to Area 6 (Scarlett Commons & Greek Row) staff. This individual is infamous in housing and residence life staff already, because of conduct issues reported during the previous academic year, wherein a number of female residents at [Redacted]previous housing assignment complained of [Redacted]conduct and reported that he had been entering into the womens' restrooms while completing rounds. If it weren't already clear that a male RA NOT entering female restrooms at any point is common sense, then the breach of contract and RA protocol should be enough for disciplinary action. This issue, however, was not taken seriously by MTSU HRL, and resulted not only in [Redacted]keeping his job, but also in his being placed on a staff where he will have far more access to female students, including those secluded in sorority houses on Greek Row. He was placed on this staff because he is required to be on call and to complete rounds with another RA partner, essentially sending the message to area staff that it is now their responsibility to keep [Redacted]accountable and out of trouble. However, when responding to calls after hours, [Redacted]would not be required to have staff accompany him, which could potentially give him unfettered access to all-female housing late at night, as well as access to keys for each of those individuals' rooms.
If that weren't enough, this individual's name is publicly accessible because of an article written about him for MTSU's very own Sidelines newspaper only a year ago. The content of this article was damning, outlining previous statements made by [Redacted]recovered in screenshots of a Discord forum that were racially insensitive, aggressive, and violent; tone-deaf and offensive; and apathetic and dismissive of the severity of sexual assault.
The staff on which [Redacted]is supposed to be placed is overwhelmingly female, and women of color at that. The carelessness not only of staff safety in working with this individual but also resident safety is shameful and deplorable. We urge you to sign this petition to protect students and student staff, and hold MTSU HRL accountable; we, as student staff and residents ourselves, DO NOT feel comfortable adding an individual to staff whose personal beliefs and practices seem entirely at odds with what is urged of us in our conduct and safety training.
