The Issue

Every day, families across our community are living in fear. We hear stories of break-ins, carjackings, and violent crimes affecting our neighbors, and, unfortunately, these incidents are happening more often. The real trauma goes beyond stolen property—it’s the fear and invasion of privacy that are hardest to recover from. Families are waking up to strangers in their homes, facing armed intruders who don’t hesitate to bring weapons into what should be a safe space. It’s not just cars or valuables being taken; it’s our peace of mind, our security, and, most frighteningly, our safety. With every crime, every break-in, and every car stolen, we are losing trust in the very place we call home.

If things continue as they are, this dangerous cycle will only escalate. Today, it’s carjacking and break-ins; tomorrow, it could be much worse. These crimes are often carried out by repeat offenders who, despite their actions, are quickly released and able to continue harming our community. We must think of those with children, the elderly, and every individual who deserves to feel safe at home. If we don’t act now, we risk this crisis becoming the new norm—a city where crime and fear overshadow our lives. But if we take action and push for tougher laws, stricter bail conditions, and serious consequences for these offenders, we can restore peace and safety to our neighborhoods.

Proposed Solutions: To address this growing problem, we call for the following immediate actions to strengthen our laws and protect our communities:

  1. Mandatory Sentencing: Establish mandatory jail sentences with no parole for first-time offenders involved in break-ins, carjackings, or similar violent crimes, and enforce significantly longer sentences for repeat offenders.

Example: In Singapore, strict mandatory minimum sentencing has led to one of the world’s lowest crime rates, as it creates a strong deterrent and ensures that violent offenders face real consequences.
  2. End to Easy Bail: No bail for individuals charged with violent crimes like break-ins and carjacking; offenders should be kept in custody until their hearing to prevent further danger to the community.

Example: Australia has implemented no-bail policies for individuals accused of serious crimes like carjacking, which has reduced repeat offenses and kept communities safer.
  3. Car Manufacturer Regulations: The federal government should require car manufacturers to install kill switches or similar technology that allows vehicle owners or law enforcement to disable stolen vehicles, making it harder for criminals to use or resell stolen cars.

Example: South Africa has seen a reduction in carjackings due to mandatory tracking devices and vehicle security technology, which makes it easier to locate and recover stolen vehicles.

  4. Right to Defend: Grant homeowners the full right to defend themselves and their property against intruders, reinforcing that Canadians have the right to feel safe within their homes.

Example: In certain states in the United States, "Stand Your Ground" laws give homeowners the right to defend themselves and their property, which has empowered citizens to protect themselves in cases of violent intrusion.

  5. Home Security Grants: Implement programs that provide grants or subsidies for residents to install security measures, such as alarms, cameras, and reinforced doors, especially in high-crime areas.

Example: The United Kingdom offers home security grants to help residents in vulnerable areas secure their homes, which has reduced burglary rates by making homes less attractive targets for criminals.

We can no longer sit by and let this happen. This issue isn’t just on the news—it’s right here, in our neighborhoods, affecting people we know and love. Every day we wait is another day someone else may experience the horror of waking up to an intruder in their home. We need change now, not tomorrow, and we need the government to hear us loud and clear. We’re calling for immediate reform of Canada’s bail laws, tougher sentencing for violent crimes, and policies that put the safety of law-abiding citizens first.

Enough is enough—it’s time to protect our communities and make our voices heard.
