Protect Our Pets on the Road: A Simple Step to Keep Dogs Safe in Cars

The Issue

For many of us, our dogs aren’t just pets, they’re family. They ride with us to the beach, the vet, coffee runs, and everywhere in between. And because we love them, we want them close.

But one common habit, letting a dog sit on a driver’s lap or roam freely in a moving car can turn dangerous in seconds.

This isn’t about blaming pet owners. It’s about recognizing a risk that many of us simply haven’t thought about.

Nearly 1 in 3 drivers report being distracted by their pet while driving.
About 1 in 5 admit to letting their dog sit on their lap.
Distracted driving contributes to thousands of deaths each year, including 150+ lives lost annually in California alone (officially recorded as distracted driving)
In a sudden stop or crash, an unrestrained dog can:

-Be seriously injured or killed, even at low speeds.
-Be thrown from the vehicle.
-Interfere with steering or braking in critical moments.
-Become a projectile that harms both themselves and others.

Most people who do this aren’t being careless, they’re being loving.

They want their dog close. Calm. Comforted.

But in reality, that closeness can put the dog directly in harm’s way—especially with airbags, sudden stops, or unexpected hazards on the road.

We are asking for a common-sense law that requires animals in moving vehicles to be safely restrained in a way that does not interfere with the driver.

This could include:

-Pet seatbelt harnesses
-Crates or carriers
-Backseat barriers
This is not about punishment—it’s about prevention.

By signing this petition, you are supporting:

-Safer roads for everyone.
-Protection for animals who depend on us.
-Responsible, informed pet ownership.
-This is a small change that can prevent unnecessary tragedy for both people and the pets we love.

Let’s protect them the same way we protect ourselves.
