I'd like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the thoughtful neighbours who decided that a warm summer night — when many of us prefer to sleep with our windows open — was the ideal occasion for a full-scale (and seemingly illegal) firework display well after midnight. Nothing says "consideration for others" quite like exploding pyrotechnics when most people are trying to get some sleep.

I'd also like to congratulate the various drivers of the white Lamborghini Aventador, apparently operating under some sort of community car-share scheme, who spent much of Sunday afternoon entertaining the valley with an endless symphony of revving engines, pops, bangs and crackles. It was reassuring to know that peace and quiet never stood a chance.

Special recognition must go to the dedicated performers who then treated us to an encore throughout the evening and well into the night. True artists know when to leave the audience wanting more — apparently these ones don't.

Finally, a standing ovation for the Police. Despite receiving numerous complaints, they heroically managed not to stop the vehicle. We are informed that officers had seen the car, but it was "driving normally."
Well, yes. "No shit, Sherlock."

Most antisocial behaviour is, in fact, carried out while the vehicle is driving normally. Few offenders helpfully drive upside down, on fire, while waving a sign saying "Please stop me."

A remarkable effort all round. Here's hoping next weekend's entertainment programme includes air horns at 2am and perhaps a brass band in the cemetery.
