Protect Our Ocean: Indigenous Call for Banning Bio-Plastics

The Issue

Hello Tribe,

The Spirits have a message for you.  Several things in your everyday life such as a razor, toothbrush and packaging are all made from bioplastics.  For many of you at home on the Rez or off,  please understand that bioplastics are typically made from acids.   Bio plastics are being banned around the globe specifically targeting single use plastics because of their chemical properties such as the presence of PFAS and the release of CO2.  May I mind you Tribe that plastic is not our culture.   I strongly feel that plastics are a form of colonialism that has replaced a traditional way of life with an American culture of genocide.  In our minds we know that plastic is harmful to the environment and we see plastics take life so why can't we do something about our future?  Why can’t we ban bio plastics?

For the first time in our history plastics have been found in the Sierra snowpack, which is the drinking water supply for my current residence in Lodi, CA.  With my previous experience as a Tribal water treatment operator I know many water municipalities do not possess the infrastructure to filter out the micro plastics therefore creating a public human health hazard.

The Spirits tell me that we must ban bio plastics along with single use plastics like our leader Deb Halland.   Many countries are banning bio plastics along with several local counties such as Marin.  This is the time we take a stance to create our own future and our voices be heard by expressing our rights as sovereign nations.  Please encourage your community to ban bio plastics and single use items.
