Protect Our Kids: Install Traffic Safety Measures at Grover Cleveland Elementary School
The Issue
As someone who lives on Montgomery Street, right across from Grover Cleveland Elementary School, I see the danger kids face every day when cars speed down the street. It makes me really worried whenever I see a child trying to cross, and I know other neighbors feel the same way. Some drivers don’t follow the speed limit, especially where kids are walking, and that’s really scary.
The National Safety Council says most kids who are hit by cars near schools get hurt between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., and again from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., when kids are going to or leaving school. A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that from 2009 to 2018, 264 kids died in crashes near schools. Many of these deaths could have been stopped if there were things like speed bumps or better safety rules in place.
We’re asking the local leaders to do something about this problem before more kids get hurt. We think they should put in speed bumps, make sure cars slow down, have crossing guards during school hours, and teach people how important it is to drive safely in school zones.
Keeping our kids safe should always come first. This is our message, not just as people who live here, but as parents and community members who want the best for our kids. Please sign our petition to help make sure kids can walk to school safely. Together, we can make a change.
