Protect our Heritage - Listed Status for Bloxwich Hospital

We, the residents of Bloxwich and Walsall urgently call for Bloxwich Hospital, a cherished landmark since its construction around 1850, to be granted listed status to protect its historical and cultural significance.

The hospital has been a cornerstone of our community for over 170 years and was once owned by the Foster family who also owned the adjacent,   Grade II listed Bloxwich Hall.

It was acquired by Walsall Corporation in 1927 and transformed into a maternity hospital, opening in July 1929 with four wards, an operating theatre and staff accommodation.  It was served by Dr. Norman Gilchrist (who resided next door at Bloxwich Hall) before later being repurposed as a mental health unit and eventually closing in February 2025.

The building stands proudly at the entrance of Bloxwich High Street and is well known and well loved by residents of Bloxwich and Walsall, many of whom were born there.  We would like this building to be granted listed status to help ensure its preservation for future generations and safeguard its heritage for the people of Bloxwich and Walsall.

The building is now being prepared for sale and so urgent action is needed  to ensure the building is not demolished or significantly altered and the building's heritage is preserved.
