Protect our fish from Overpredation by Seals

The Issue

I am not just a passionate fisherman, but also a watchful guardian of the Thames river. As an active part of the fishing community between Kingston and Hampton Court, I represent a group of us who are increasingly witnessing the decimation of our Carp population due to seals. The river, alive with life and vibrance, is steadily being drained of its vitality.

Each day, massive Carp – fish that took 10 to 20 years to grow to their current size, are being consumed, leaving only scraps behind. Watching these once majestic creatures float lifeless, stripped only to their head, is not only heart-wrenching but alarms us of a rapidly transforming ecosystem that might soon be bereft of its key species.

The seals, although fascinating creatures, do not belong in the Thames and their increasing numbers are causing a ripple effect through the food chain, threatening the life cycle of not only Carp but other riverine species as well. The situation calls for immediate action before there's irreparable damage to the river ecosystem.

The Environmental Agency (EA) has been approached, but their response has been disappointing, downplaying the significant impact the seals are causing instead of focusing on the protection of our rivers and fish population, which is their mandate.

The hope of this petition is to draw the attention of the appropriate authorities who can address this urgent issue. The Thames is more than just a river. It represents a community, an ecosystem, and a way of life for the many of us who depend on it. Let's join hands to rectify this misplaced balance of nature and save our river before it's too late. Please sign this petition, every voice counts!
