Protect our Community from Vicious Dog Attacks in Yanchep WA, Australia

The issue

Our neighborhood has recently been terrorized by vicious dog attacks, owned by irresponsible individuals.

The heart-breaking manifestation of such negligence hit close to home when my mother’s beloved pet cat was viciously mauled to death by these dogs in my mother’s own front yard. A nightmare too many other households in our area have tragically also experienced.

Evidence suggests that most dog attacks are not due to the inherent temperament of breeds but are a direct result of the conditions in which the dogs live, largely attributed to the behavior of their owners. According to statistics from the Australian Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), responsible ownership is crucial to a dog's behavior, with emphasized factors including early socialization, quality of care, neutering, and the information the owner has about "normal dog behavior."

Let us recall that it's not just our pets under attack. These aggressive dogs are a danger to everyone - children and adults alike. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) note that approximately 100,000 dog bites occur in Australia per year.

And according to the Australian Veterinary Association, approximately 13,000 people each year require hospital treatment due to dog attacks.

So far, The City of Wanneroo Shire and Rangers have failed in their responsibility to protect our community. The dogs have escaped their yard on countless occasions and have been placed back in the inadequate care of their irresponsible, neglectful owners.

The dogs have been spotted and photographed to have escaped their yard once again only days ago, wearing their ‘dangerous dog’ warning collars.

These collars indicate that the owners (by law) must ensure the dogs under no circumstances are allowed to wander freely or unaccompanied within the community, without a leash or a muzzle, for the safety of all community members, wildlife and pets alike.

Particularly vulnerable are children under the age of 5 and the elderly, who account for 76.5 percent of hospital admissions (source: Injury Facts, Australian Institute of Health and Welfare). Hence, it is our demand that the shire do its duty and impose strict removal of these aggressive, dangerous dogs to protect members of our community and our biodiversity.

It is our responsibility to ensure that every pet owner in our community behaves responsibly and cares adequately for their animals. This includes eliminating environments where animals develop aggressive behavior, thus risking the wellbeing of other pets and individuals.

Join us in demanding the authorities enact and enforce the laws that require negligent owners to take responsibility and remove these vicious dogs from their possession. It's time to foster a safe neighborhood for all, free from pet owners who neglect their responsibilities.

Please sign our petition in order to prevent further attacks, loss of life and suffering. As is our biggest fear that it’s a child’s life next.

We wholeheartedly appreciate all of your support.
