The Issue

PETITION FOR SCHOOL ZONE & SAFE CROSSING

To:

• Township of Wainfleet Council
• Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO)
• Niagara Region Road Safety Authorities

We, the undersigned residents, parents, and community members, are calling for immediate safety measures at the intersection of Highway #3 and Park Street in Wainfleet, Ontario, including:

• Installation of a designated pedestrian crosswalk
• Implementation of a clearly marked school zone and/or community safety zone
• Consideration of reduced speed limits, signage, and/or crossing guards

WHY THIS MATTERS

The intersection of Highway #3 and Park Street is located within a community area where children and families regularly travel to:
• Marshville Public School
• St. Elizabeth’s School
• Recreational facilities (arena and park)
• Libraries and local businesses

Highway #3 is a busy provincial roadway, and this intersection sees consistent pedestrian activity. This creates a high-risk environment, especially for children who must cross without adequate safety infrastructure.

COMMUNITY CONCERN

Residents and families have ongoing concerns about:
• High vehicle speeds typical of a provincial highway
• Lack of safe and designated crossing points at this intersection
• Increased pedestrian traffic in a school/community zone
• Limited signage or traffic calming measures

Without intervention, the intersection of Highway #3 and Park Street remains a serious and preventable safety risk.

OUR REQUEST

We are formally requesting that the Township of Wainfleet and the Ministry of Transportation:
1. Conduct a traffic and pedestrian safety assessment at this intersection
2. Install a safe, marked pedestrian crossing at Highway #3 and Park Street

3. Designate this area as a school zone and/or community safety zone
4. Implement traffic calming measures (e.g., reduced speed, signage, enforcement, crossing guard)

CALL TO ACTION

We urge decision-makers to act proactively to protect the physical safety, emotional security and well-being of children, families, and all pedestrians in our community. A safe crossing at Highway #3 and Park Street is not optional—it is necessary.
