As parents, we trust daycares and schools with the most precious part of our lives — our children. The recent tragedy in Richmond Hill, where a vehicle drove directly into a daycare classroom, killing a toddler and injuring others, broke our hearts. No family should ever have to face such unimaginable pain.

This devastating event has shown us a dangerous gap in safety. It is not only entrances or playgrounds that need protection — classrooms and the entire sides of buildings that face streets or parking lots must also be secured.

We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Ontario, York Region, and all municipalities to take immediate action by:
 1. Requiring strong protective barriers along any side of daycare and school buildings that face parking lots or roads.
 2. Updating building and safety codes to ensure classrooms, play areas, and entrances are fully protected from vehicle impact.
 3. Providing funding and support so existing facilities can urgently install these protections.

Our children deserve safe classrooms and learning spaces. One life lost is already far too many. We urge you to act now.
