Proposed Recommendation

On 17 June 2026, our community was devastated by the tragic loss of two young lives in a traffic accident near Cabramatta West Public School. This heartbreaking event has deeply affected local families and heightened concerns about road and pedestrian safety around our schools. In the days that followed, further safety concerns were observed at the Grant Avenue access point to Cabramatta West Public School. This driveway serves as an important access route for students, families, staff, authorised school vehicles, and disability transport services.

Community members have reported ongoing misuse of this area by private vehicles, creating unnecessary risks for pedestrians. Incidents observed have included vehicles using the driveway inappropriately, near-misses involving parents and children entering and exiting the school grounds, and instances of aggressive behaviour arising during attempts to remind drivers of the intended purpose of the access point. These situations have left many families concerned that a more serious incident could occur if action is not taken.

For students in the school's Support Unit and those living with disabilities, safe transport access is not simply a convenience—it is a necessity. Many rely on specialised transport services and require a safe, unobstructed environment for pick-ups and drop-offs. Every child deserves safe access to education, regardless of their individual needs.

Members of the school and the community have repeatedly raised concerns regarding safety at this location and have requested action to improve conditions. While these concerns have been communicated through appropriate channels, the risks still remain present. We believe it is now time for meaningful action to address these ongoing safety issues.

We are calling on Fairfield City Council, and where necessary our local Members of Parliament, to undertake an urgent safety assessment of the Grant Avenue access point and work collaboratively with the school and its community to implement practical safety measures.

Potential improvements may include:

• Clear line marking across the driveway to identify restricted access areas and reinforce existing no-parking requirements.

• Signage clearly identifying the area as an authorised school vehicle and disability transport access point.

• Increased monitoring and enforcement of parking and traffic regulations during school hours.

• Improved traffic management measures to reduce conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians, including consideration of a streamlined community reporting process for parking and traffic infringements (please see attached proposal recommendation for more information).

• Community education initiatives to raise awareness of safe driving practices and shared responsibilities around schools.

This petition is not about assigning blame. It is about preventing future harm.

As a community, we have an opportunity to act before another serious incident occurs. Improvements made at this location could not only protect students, families, staff, transport providers, and the wider community at Cabramatta West Public School, but also serve as a model for addressing similar safety concerns at other schools throughout our region.

No parent should have to worry about whether their child can safely enter or leave their school grounds. By signing this petition, you are supporting practical, common-sense measures that put children's safety, accessibility, and wellbeing first.

Please sign this petition and join us in calling for immediate action to improve safety at Cabramatta West Public School's Grant Avenue access point.

If you have witnessed incidents, near-misses, access issues, or other safety concerns relating to this location, you are invited to provide information and supporting evidence via email to misskrys.inc@outlook.com with the subject line: "CWPS Evidence". Community submissions may assist in building a comprehensive record of concerns to support future representations and formal requests for action.

Together, we can create and set the example of a safer environment for everyone - especially our children.
