The Issue

My daughter was exposed to harmful pesticides while attending her after-school program in Watsonville, CA. This distressing incident has left me, like many other parents, deeply concerned about the health and safety of our children in schools where they should be most protected.

Children are some of the most vulnerable members of our society. Their developing bodies are more susceptible to the harmful effects of toxic chemicals, including those found in many pesticides. Numerous scientific studies have shown that exposure to these chemicals can lead to serious health problems such as developmental disorders, respiratory issues, and even certain types of cancer.

In the Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), schools are intended to be safe havens for learning and growth, not places where children are put at risk. Yet, pesticides are often sprayed near school grounds, unwittingly exposing our children and school staff to dangerous substances. This is a risk we cannot continue to take.

According to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation, over 2,000,000 pounds of pesticides were applied in our School District in 2022 alone. In the same year 20,000 pounds of Organophosphates were also applied. This includes substances known to be harmful to human health. In neighboring agricultural fields, many of which are adjacent to PVUSD schools, these toxic chemicals are routinely used, leading to unintended exposure.

We understand the importance of agriculture to our community, but this must not come at the cost of our children's health. It is within our power to make a change. We propose that the PVUSD Board of Trustees, along with the City Council and County Supervisors, enforce a ban on the use of toxic pesticides within a one-mile radius of any PVUSD school.

This is not an impossible task. Other communities have successfully implemented similar bans, proving that it can be done. We can provide alternative pest management solutions that do not compromise health and safety.

Sign our petition to urge PVUSD, local city council, and county supervisors to take immediate action and protect our children from the harmful effects of toxic pesticides. Together, we can create a safer, healthier environment for our children to learn and thrive.
