Protect Our Athletes: Support $1.3M Budget for Athletic Trainers at all 13 High Schools
The Issue
My teammates and I at Marriotts High School, like many other student-athletes in the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS), are at risk every time we step onto the field or court. Currently, only 6 of the 13 high schools in Howard County have access to a part-time athletic trainer. This lack of professional medical support has had tragic effects: a fellow student-athlete at Hammond High suffered a critical injury that went unaddressed, leaving him in a permanent vegetative state.
This is not just a statistic; it's a life-altering event that has shattered families and deeply affected our community. We cannot overlook the crucial role that athletic trainers play in safeguarding the health and well-being of student-athletes. By providing prompt medical attention and injury prevention, these professionals ensure that students can compete safely.
The Howard County budget proposal allocation of $1.3 million to fund 13 athletic trainers—one for each of the county's high schools—is not just necessary but urgent. This funding will ensure that every student-athlete across Howard County has access to the medical care they need, regardless of which school they attend.
We are calling on County Board Members, school administrators, and community leaders to prioritize the safety and health of our student-athletes. Investing in full-time athletic trainers will provide a safety net for students and allow parents and guardians to have peace of mind knowing that their children are protected.
High school sports are meant to build character, promote health, and foster community spirit, not risk young lives. Supporting this budget proposal is an investment in the safety and future of our students.
Join us in advocating for the well-being of every student-athlete in Howard County.
Please sign this petition to urge Howard County officials to approve the budget proposal for athletic trainers in all 13 HCPSS high schools for the 26-27 school year.
