Protect Online Freedom: Say No to KOPA!

The Issue

We, concerned citizens and advocates for online freedom, stand united against the proposed Kids Online Protection Act (KOPA). This legislation threatens to undermine our fundamental rights and liberties while failing to effectively address the issue it claims to tackle. We urge lawmakers to reject this misguided bill in order to preserve a free and open internet for all.

  1. Rejecting Minors' Freedoms:
Passing KOPA would result in people under the age of 17 being denied the ability to use apps and services that they are currently allowed to (i.e. Twitter, Instagram, Fandom), and limit access to resources such as mental help forums.

  2. Ineffective Approach:
KOPA aims to protect children from harmful content online, but its approach is deeply flawed. By imposing stringent regulations on internet service providers (ISPs) and website operators, KOPA fails to acknowledge that responsible parenting and education are the most effective means of protecting children online. Studies have consistently shown that parental involvement is crucial in ensuring a safe digital environment for young users.

  3. Chilling Effect on Free Speech:
If passed into law, KOPA would grant broad powers of censorship over online platforms, stifling free speech and expression. The vague language used in the bill could lead to overreach by authorities who may interpret it as an opportunity for excessive control over internet content beyond its intended purpose, i.e. targeting minorities like the LGBTQIA+ and disabled populations.

  4. Potential Privacy Concerns:
Under KOPA's provisions, ISPs would be required to collect extensive user data in order to comply with monitoring requirements. This raises serious concerns about privacy invasion and potential misuse of personal information by both government agencies and private entities.

  5. Burden on Small Businesses:
Complying with the complex regulations outlined in KOPA would disproportionately burden small businesses and startups operating online platforms or services aimed at children's entertainment or education. These enterprises already face numerous challenges; additional compliance costs could stifle innovation within this sector.

  6. Existing Laws Are Sufficient:
The existing legal framework already provides several robust measures aimed at protecting children from inappropriate content online, such as the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) which focuses on data collection practices. Rather than introducing redundant legislation, efforts should be directed towards enforcing and strengthening existing laws.

We call upon lawmakers to prioritize the preservation of our online freedoms and reject the Kids Online Protection Act (KOPA). Let us focus on empowering parents, educators, and guardians with the necessary tools to guide children safely through the digital landscape while safeguarding our cherished principles of free speech and privacy.
