Thank you for signing the petition to save Old Crow wetland from the impacts of a planned Rutters truck stop next to it.

Now is a crucial time for this issue.

PA Department of Environmental Protection has scheduled a public hearing Wednesday May 3, 6:30 pm at Smithfield Fire Hall, 10 Firehouse Lane, Huntingdon PA 16652

on Rutters’ application to DEP for an NPDES permit, which regulates stormwater discharge.

The coalition is asking DEP to deny that permit because of harm to the wetland that would be caused by a Rutters.

Please attend the hearing and speak there if you can. To speak at the hearing, email John Repetz at jrepetz@pa.gov or call him at (717) 705-4904 by 4 pm Tuesday, May 2. Five minutes speaking time per person.

If you can't speak at the hearing please email these four DEP email addresses about your concerns about this project, before May 18 2023.

2. Nathan Phillips natphillip@pa.gov

3. Andrea Blosser, Acting Regional Director, ablosser@pa.gov

Some of the concerns we share include:

·        Traffic congestion and longer drive times caused by an additional traffic light on route 22 just to serve the truck stop.

·        Increased heavy truck traffic, bright lights, gas fumes, and noise, all of which can have adverse effects on health and comfort.

·       Risk to the Old Crow wetland. This wetland is a significant tourist destination and fragile ecosystem. The proposed location of the truck stop is next to and uphill from the wetland.

Why should we face longer commutes, increased pollution, and risks to the fragile wildlife that we all enjoy for a truck stop that serves people passing through?

Smithfield supervisors can legally reject this project.
